Ambulance Membership

The Metropolitan Ambulance Service has warned Victorians without private health insurance that they could face bills running into thousands of dollars if they need an ambulance.

Metropolitan Ambulance Service Chief Executive Greg Sassella says some people don’t realise that Medicare does not cover the cost of ambulance services.

‘People without private health cover may be exposed to potentially large bills if they call for an ambulance,’ he said.

‘Emergency ambulance transport costs more than $870, while transport by the air ambulance helicopter can cost more than $5,000.

‘The best way to guarantee you are fully covered for an ambulance is to join the Ambulance Victoria Membership Scheme

‘It is difficult enough to see a family member injured in an accident around the home, or to suffer a serious medical condition. For a small price, people can guarantee they won’t be faced with ambulance bills as their loved ones recover.’

Last year more than 480-thousand Victorians needed an ambulance.

Ambulance membership costs as little as $60 for a one year membership for singles, and $120 for a year for family membership.

Family membership also covers children aged under 17, and fulltime students under 25.

Anyone who becomes a member during May will receive a 10 percent discount on their first year’s membership.
