Advanced Life Support

In 2004 the Metropolitan Ambulance Service started training paramedics in advanced life support (ALS).

This was a significant step forward in elevating the skills of ambulance paramedics and made us one of the most progressive ambulance services in the world.

Through the ALS program, qualified ambulance paramedics now have the ability to:

  • insert an intravenous cannula (drip)
  • administer pain relief medication, including intravenous morphine
  • advanced airway management skills and equipment
  • intravenous drug therapy for cardiac arrest patients
  • intravenous fluid replacement for trauma patients

Further information on these procedures can be gained from our clinical practice guidelines.
