Clinical Support Officers

The Clinical Support Officer’s (CSO) main role is to take the lead role in the development of clinical performance for paramedics.

To do this, they monitor and audit current performance levels by reviewing case sheets and testing paramedic competency in procedures and clinical protocols. Clinical Support Officers also assist in the development and teaching of all training modules.

CSO paramedics also provide the clinical authority for the Ambulance Communications Centre. In the role of the clinician they triage cases to ensure adequate ambulance resources are dispatched. They also liaise with hospitals and doctors to manage both hospital bypass and ensure the broader health system works more efficiently.

CSO paramedics can also respond to cases and treat at a level of a MICA paramedic. They often command major incident scenes as controlling officer until senior operational managers arrive.
