Response

There are different levels of qualifications across our paramedics. We have student ambulance paramedics who are supervised during their work on the road by a clinical instructor.

Once initial training is complete, the next level is that of a qualified ambulance paramedic who works with a fellow paramedic on an emergency ambulance. Qualified ambulance paramedics may also have advanced life support skills.

Further training can qualify someone to be a mobile intensive care ambulance (MICA) paramedic, who has more advanced drug therapy and clinical skills. They can work either as a two-person MICA crew or as a single responder MICA paramedic.

The highest level of clinical training is attained by our clinical support officers (CSO).

In addition to our paramedics, we also have first responder initiatives to assist in medical emergencies. This includes a partnership with the fire brigade, community programs known as community emergency response teams (CERT) and public access defibrillators (PAD) sites located across Melbourne.
