Wounds

There are essentially three types of wounds. Abrasions are scrapes and grazes that might be the result of slipping on wet concrete for example; Lacerations or incisions might be the result of cuts from rocks or broken glass on the beach; Contusions (bruises) might result from bumping into other swimmers, hitting rocks or around the pool, bumping into the end of a lane.

Management of wounds is straightforward. Just wash in clean running water, clean with sterile saline or antiseptic, dry using sterile gauze and cover with a sterile dressing. An Ambulance Victoria First Aid kit will have all the things you need to manage wounds.

Be sure to seek medical attention if there is any doubt about the severity of the wound, if the wound cannot be easily cleaned, if you are concerned about infection or if you think stitches may be required. It is also a good idea to ask when the casualty last received a tetanus injection. Tetanus is a potentially fatal infection that is often caused by a bacteria that has entered the body from a contaminated puncture wound.
