Medical Guidelines
MAS follows the medical standards 'Assessing Fitness to Drive for Commercial & Private Vehicle Drivers 2003'. These standards have been developed by the National Road Transport Commission and Austroads in conjunction with a wide range of medical experts, peak medical bodies, the road transport industry and State and Territory licensing authorities.
In accordance with the ‘Assessing Fitness to Drive for Commercial and Private Vehicle Drivers 2003’ guidelines, to safely perform the role of an ambulance paramedic, candidates will be expected to meet the medical standards of an unconditional commercial vehicle licence.
The medical assessment is currently conducted by Unified Healthcare Group, and will cost the applicant approximately $164.80.
The 'Assessing Fitness to Drive for Commercial & Private Vehicle Drivers 2003' guidelines are available to view or download at the Austroads website www.austroads.com.au.
Please note that in addition to these standards, applicants are also assessed for any other medical conditions, which may uniquely impact on their ability to safely perform the role of ambulance paramedic.
Applicants who are concerned about how their medical condition may be assessed (including vision, hearing, diabetes, epilepsy, etc), are advised to refer to the medical standards before progressing in the selection process.
